How does your septic system work?
You may be wondering exactly how your septic system functions. It’s somewhat easy to understand. Wastewater from your home enters and is held in the septic tank where solid debris settles to the bottom. This is what we call the sludge layer. The lighter waste in the septic tank rises to the top and forms the scum layer. Between the two layers is a clarified liquid that flows into an outlet pipe where it is dissipated via a drain field. The bacteria in the septic tank will organically break down the waste matter inside and slow the buildup of the sludge layer at the bottom.
